The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta seeks a distinguished scholar to fill a tenured/tenure track position for a three-year appointment as the Masonry Contractors Association of Alberta (MCAA) Endowed Chair in Masonry Structures.

The Masonry Chair in Masonry Systems is a three-million dollar endowed research chair funded by the MCAA and the Government of Alberta’s Access to the Future Fund. An integral part of the mandate of the MCAA Masonry Chair is to develop and teach academic and professional courses in the design and analysis of masonry systems and masonry building envelopes. The Chair’s mandate aims to remove the unjustifiable limitations imposed on masonry construction due to inadequate and outdated information, reveal the untapped capabilities of contemporary masonry, and drive innovation in masonry design.

The scholar is expected to seamlessly and professionally interact and collaborate with masonry contractors, architects, engineers, design professionals, project managers, and building officials in carrying out the Chair’s mandate. It is expected that the successful candidate builds synergies among the different disciplines in Civil Engineering in order to address masonry challenges in a holistic approach. A world-class Structures Laboratory for large-scale and component testing, and a Materials Laboratory will be available to the scholar to conduct experimental research.

The scholar will be assigned a two to three course per year teaching load, supporting the department’s Civil Engineering and Structures courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels. The scholar will be required to teach one graduate masonry course per year on Masonry Systems as part of the teaching load. Professional and institutional service is expected from the successful candidate to enhance the visibility of the Chair and the department.

Our Department is located in the Donadeo Innovation Centre for Engineering (DICE). The Department has more than 900 undergraduate and 470 graduate students, With a present complement of over 60 professors; research in the Department is vigorous and covers all major areas of Civil, Mining, and Petroleum Engineering. It currently has seven industrial research chairs and five endowed chairs.


Candidates must hold a PhD in Civil Engineering, or related field. Graduate or postdoctoral work on masonry structures and a track of excellence in masonry research will constitute an asset for the position. The successful candidate is expected to become a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Alberta. Candidates seeking appointment at the tenured/tenure track levels will be considered, with industry, government or research experience from senior applicants being pertinent considerations.
