Research Interests

My core research is in the development and application of fuzzy logic techniques to incorporate subjective reasoning and linguistic variables within intelligent decision support systems. My research contributions have significantly advanced some of the fundamental concepts of fuzzy logic and its application in construction.

I have developed a number of industrially relevant applications, including:

  • fuzzy logic concepts in simulation models to develop optimal job shop (i.e., production) schedules for industrial fabrication facilities
  • approaches to incorporate fuzzy numbers in Monte Carlo simulation to perform cost range estimating
  • a Fuzzy Monte Carlo simulation (FMCS) framework that, for the first time, allows fuzzy and probabilistic uncertainty to be considered simultaneously for the risk analysis of construction projects
  • a discrete event simulation (DES) model that uses the defuzzified (crisp) output of a fuzzy expert system as input for an activity duration, thus allowing for more explicit modeling of the subjective parameters affecting an activity’s duration
  • knowledge elicitation and consensus reaching approaches that combined fuzzy logic with other expert-based methods (Delphi technique, AHP, SAM). These approaches were applied to a fuzzy consensus building framework (FCBF) that was used in the areas of risk criticality assessment and quantification, to developing fuzzy consensus building models to classify the roles and responsibilities of different parties in a given project delivery system, and to assess construction contractors for surety bonding. The overall FCBF model can be applied to any project delivery system during the project’s initiation phase to account for the perspectives of different experts in deciding on teams’ roles and responsibilities on a task by task basis, and to achieve project teams’ alignment
  • a number of fuzzy logic decision support systems for construction performance diagnosis and improvement: a fuzzy expert system for construction supervisors’ skills assessment (Foreman Skills Development Tool), a methodology and software tool (Absenteeism Tracking Tool) for tracking workforce absenteeism, a systematic approach and software tool (SuretyAssist) to assess contractors’ qualifications for surety bonding
  • a benchmarking system for construction project and organizational level performance, and an approach to assess the quality of infrastructure projects at the conceptual cost estimating stage using a fuzzy expert system (FES)
  • a comprehensive framework for conducting risk management using fuzzy logic. Three well-known reliability engineering techniques, Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Event Tree Analysis (ETA), were combined in a novel way to support risk identification, risk analysis, and risk response, while considering the subjective characteristics of risk-related data by incorporating fuzzy logic
  • The limitations of traditional FMEA were addressed using fuzzy expert systems and the fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). This component of the framework was implemented in a software entitled Risk Criticality Analyzer (RCA)
  • A Fuzzy Reliability Analyzer (FRA) was developed to automate FTA. Fault Trees and Event Trees were further combined in a novel way to include fuzzy probability calculations of failure of risk response strategies and the expected monetary value of risk events. An additional module was added to the FRA to automate ETA.

Research in Progress

I am developing hybrid intelligent decision support systems that incorporate fuzzy logic with other modeling techniques, such as artificial neural networks, genetic algorithms, and simulation. This research has significant potential to change the way in which we model construction operations and decisions, leading to a more accurate and realistic representation of the expert reasoning process and uncertainty involved.

I am collaborating with Dr. Lee and Dr. Gellatly on a SSHRC Research Grant to study the impact of the social and cultural context on the absenteeism behaviour of construction personnel using fuzzy logic and system dynamics.

I completed a multi-phase study with the Construction Sector Council and other Canadian researchers to benchmark the performance of the Canadian civil and infrastructure construction industry against a global standard.

My current applications include:

  • incorporating expert knowledge and subjective variables into integrated discrete event simulation models for schedule optimization and productivity improvement;
  • identifying the most significant causes of labour productivity and performance deviations on major capital projects;
  • studying the career paths that tradespeople follow in Alberta, to enhance on-the-job training;
  • using fuzzy logic to develop a decision-support system for evaluating project- and contract-specific risks prior to providing construction bonds to contractors;
  • exploring the impact of WorkFace Planning on the performance of construction projects;
  • documenting state-of-the-art risk assessment and management techniques, and assessing their suitability for construction, in order to develop advanced risk assessment and management techniques and tools;
  • developing a systematic approach to define the roles and responsibilities of various parties to a project and their associated competencies for different project delivery strategies to determine effective levels of owner project planning and controls and appropriate tools and techniques, based on different contracting strategies;
  • developing an integrated Project Status Dashboard Tool to provide information on key performance indicators, and enable project management by exception.
